Makeup: Weapons of Choice

I'm sure everyone has heard of the phrase "look good, feel good". To some, that means getting up, showering, throwing on a simple t-shirt, and embarking on his or her day. To others, it may mean getting up showering, deciding particularly how to do one's hair and/makeup for the day. I can definitely say that I am somewhere in between. It obviously doesn't do well to wake up and feel like you're not put together for the day because often times, this can impact your mood, which can then impact your work ethic for the day. To combat this "can't do" attitude, many people turn to makeup as an essential weapon of choice to combat their day. You'd be surprised at what a swipe of mascara and a little bit of lipstick will do to your mood. No, I'm not saying you need to wear makeup to have a productive day. By all means, if being productive to you means sweats and a bare face, go for it! This is why they are weapons of choice....

A myriad of brands have created their fair shares of campaigns that exemplify how their makeup can entail a "can do" attitude. For example, Maybelline released a platform in 2016 called the "Make It Happen" campaign, featuring many different famous women including Ariana Grande and Gigi Hadid (the brand's current spokeswoman). The "Make It Happen" campaign implies a sense of empowerment in women through their makeup. The ad was narrated with statements like "this one's for the girls...who look in the mirror with confidence" and "take on the street and own it". The ad goes on to unravel a sense of passion, determination, and courage in women when using the brand's makeup...all without explicitly even portraying a dialogue from the women in the commercial saying things like "this makeup will make you a productive member of society" etc. - like the typical mascara or lipstick commercial would do. With all of these positive implications from this platform, Maybelline wanted to enhance confidence as a sense of power. It instantly makes you want to get up and get going!

The makeup industry and all that it entails continue in their marketing efforts to convey this sense of confidence in women, and show that makeup can empower such productivity, slashing negative comments about the artificial appearance of makeup in the process. All in all, makeup is definitely a weapon of destruction....to some that destruction may literally mean an unaesthetic, artificial appearance of one's face, while to others it may mean a way of life....that is, a way to destroy their day with power and confidence. Where it if you want, leave it if you don't!
